The Banner Itself
This is what you supply to the banner
exchange. It advertises your site, product, or whatever you want. They vary in size from
400 pixels wide, 40 pixel high to 468 pixels wide, 70 pixels high. Whenever reference is
made to the physical dimensions of a banner it is abbreviated. The previous measurements
would be shown as 400x40 and 450x70.
The Exchange "ID"
Many banner exchanges include a
small graphic with the banner to help advertise their site. You do not have to include
these in your design, they will be added by the exchange, or included as a seperate
graphic.
The Exchange link, or slogan line
As well as or instead of an
"ID" many exchanges will have a text link below there banner. It serves the
extra purpose of giving the exchange the ability to add a slogan.
File Format
Most banner exchanges use the GIF format for their banners.
File Size
The files size of banners ranges from 7kb to 14kb. It can be difficult to reduce the size of a banner file. Many banner exchanges now give you access to GifWizard to help with this. It the banner exchange you join does not have access to GifWizard you should try the following things; Reduce the palette with a graphics program; Make the design of the banner simple, remove any animation; Get a banner designer to design the banner for you (they will have access to compression software).
Size Changes
If your banner is bigger or smaller than the size the banner exchange requires, you may be able to submit it, if the exchange automatically resizes the banners. If not, you must resize the banner to fit yourself.
